Cinder Blocks
As mentioned previously, people generally think of cinder blocks when they hear the term retaining wall. But there are a number of options to consider when you are thinking about getting a concrete wall installed.
There are product lines such as the one Basalite offers that range from 12 inches in size to 16 inches in size. These are what you frequently see around garden beds. These manufactured concrete blocks come in a variety of shapes and colors which allows the consumer to mix and match to their hearts desire.
When the wall gets above 5 feet it takes a little more planning and engineering to ensure the integrity of the wall in the long term. We will measure the foundation depth to make sure that what is below the surface equates to one eighth of what you see above the surface. For instance if the wall is to be 8 feet tall we will dig down one foot to make sure the wall is sturdy. Another good technique we use is to make sure that the blocks are slightly tilted back towards the hill they are supporting so they do not fall forward over time. Allowing for the proper drainage is another key point we consider when building a wall. Placing some form of aggregate behind the wall allows water to pass through to the drainage pipe and will prevent erosion of the material behind the wall.
Leave the retaining wall construction to the experts at Kuna Concrete Concepts.
